The Foundation
Founded in 1952; Under the name Lam Shun Pawnshop.
New Beginning
Eventually became New Lam Shun Pawnshop in 1980.
Growing the Team
Pawnshop operations went beyond the family circle in 1985 by hiring staffs.
Sun Gate Is Born
In 1987, Sun Gate Pawnshop was established (present day Mercado Ext. branch).
Incorporated
In 1989, Sun Gate Pawnshop became a corporation.
First Computerized Pawnshop
Became first computerized pawnshop in Zamboanga City in 1990.
Family Expansion
In 1993, the founders set up one pawnshop for each of the four children.
One Sun Gate
In 1996, the family decided to consolidate all four pawnshops under one name-- SGPI.
Slogan & Expansion
In 1997, the company coined their official slogan "Kaibigang Malalapitan, SGP ang pangalan" and launched the official jingle which became popular. Also expanded to Iligan City by opening its first branch located at PA. Company's Mission and Vision were created, which highlights SGPI's 4 cornerstones: Customer Satisfaction, Employee Excellence, Economic Stability and Pride in Achievement.
New Logo Launch
Another milestone added up to Sun Gate's history, the launching of its NEW Logo on November 15, 2001, which has its beautiful meaning: " The "Sun" with a square background is a modern rendition of the company name, SUN GATE. It signifies strength via the bold, yellow and stability, as it is set over a square background. It seems coincidental that the square can also represent the strength of the family owners, having 4 sides to it and eight rays for the family and the customers. The eight rays are also aesthetic reasons. The rays getting larger and/or longer represent Progressiveness."
Digital Transformation
The company went beyond the traditional pawnshop model and expanded its services with the introduction of corollary business (electronic payments, etc.) by partnering with Maya (formerly known as PayMaya) in 2019 and ECPay during the 2020 pandemic.
